Martin Simson Tells Us About The Latest News And What's Next | “Trinity” Featuring Annette Olzon, Is The New Release From Destroyer Of Death
We’ve previously talked about and covered Martin Simson’s Destroyer Of Death project—a concept-driven endeavor led by bassist Martin Simson that began in 2020 and already has several singles and an excellent album to its credit: “Eternal Reign,” released in 2023, which received rave reviews across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, and which, in particular, also made its way to our ears and into our hands.
In fact, “Eternal Reign” is a great album that has gone unnoticed by many. Rooted in progressive melodic metal, it features several notable guest appearances, including Rob Rock and Jorn Lande on vocals, Rex Carroll (Whitecross) on guitar, Anders Johansson (formerly of Narnia, currently with Avatarium) on drums, Carljohann Grimmark on guitar, and Anders Köllerfors on drums (both currently with Narnia). The result is excellent, and the quality of the compositions and sound set it apart.
As a continuation of the project, Martin Simson has been releasing a few singles, including “Rescue Me” featuring the well-known Roy Khan, and his latest release from a few months ago, “Trinity,” featuring Annette Olzon—known for her time as the lead vocalist of the famous band Nightwish—in one of those impressive songs we’ve come to expect from Martin.
Regarding the production of “Trinity” and Annette Olzon’s participation, Martin told us how things came together to make this possible. “I told CJ (CJ Grimmark, current guitarist for Narnia and also a member of the Destroyer Of Death project), I wanted to write a song with her in mind. We did, and since CJ knows her brother we were able to contact her. I made her an offer which she accepted”; the result is a powerful mid-tempo track, featuring intricate guitar work and the strength of orchestral arrangements that underpin it, along with Annette Olzon’s melodic and beautiful voice, which fits perfectly. “Trinity” has its own power and the necessary hook to prove that it’s a great song.
With this in mind, and considering the previous release of “Rescue Me” with Roy Khan, it was almost a given to ask Martin Simson if a new album is on the horizon, but it seems things aren’t quite that simple. “The new album is up in the air right now because of finances”, and beyond that, it’s most likely—according to what Martin himself told us—that both “Rescue Me” and “Trinity” will be included on Destroyer Of Death’s next album.
That upcoming album doesn’t have a name or any details yet, since for now it’s just an idea—or a project. Even so, Martin Simson doesn’t plan to sit idle, and his next project is the release of a new single. “Mark Boals has done a song. It’s almost finished so not sure if it will be on a future album or if it will be another single”, he told us. Returning once again to the topic of what would be Destroyer Of Death’s second album, Martin acknowledged that, given the circumstances, there’s still no release date set, but he took the opportunity to tell us that “Rob Rock has agreed to return for a few songs”, thereby confirming his return to participate once again in Martin Simson’s project.
The fact is that, for now, Destroyer Of Death’s new album remains a mystery. “Not sure what the future holds right now”, so we’ll have to wait for a new release in physical format. What’s important is that Destroyer Of Death currently has “Trinity,” their most recent single featuring vocals by Annette Olzon, which joins the previously announced “Rescue Me” featuring Roy Khan—a release that came out in 2025— and in the meantime, we’ll most likely hear some news soon about the new track announced with Mark Boals. It’s also a great opportunity to get your hands on and listen to “Eternal Reign,” Destroyer Of Death’s only full-length album to date—a highly compelling record that we highly recommend seeking out and listening to.
