The Release Of “Consume The Scroll” Reveals Something New | The Mystery Of Scroll Eater
Facedown Records has just announced the signing and welcome of Scroll Eater, a band/project that, for now, remains something of a mystery—or at least not entirely so. Its existence was revealed a few days ago with the release of the track “Consume The Scroll,” accompanied by a music video, marking Scroll Eater’s debut single and first public appearance.
In reality, it doesn’t seem to be much of a mystery. Behind Scroll Eater are vocalist Jonathan Franco and musician Elijah Martinez, at least for now. In fact, Franco is well-known in the metalcore scene for having been a member of the band Mothaltar, which he recently left—likely to bring this new project to life, one that moves him somewhat away from the sound of his previous band.

Indeed, Scroll Eater seems to strike a different chord with a concept billed as a prophetic metal project forged in the Scriptures, as announced by the label Facedown Records itself. Their sound conveys that same intensity: with a doom-like heaviness, atmospheric, unafraid of silence or collapse, created to bear a burden rather than merely represent it. The Apocalypse at full volume, born of a divine burden. This is how Scroll Eater introduces itself.
Listening to “Consume The Scroll,” we find a truly atmospheric, climactic track with a gothic/alternative vibe in its conception but incorporating elements of post-hardcore, melodic metalcore, and more. The song in question sounds melodic and slow in its delivery, straying slightly from what current metalcore typically sounds like, though without too much variation for our taste. We’ll have to see how Scroll Eater progresses and what surprises they have in store for us in the future.
For now, this first single serves as a preview of what’s to come. Incidentally, it appears that a three-song EP is on the way. That’s what we can gather from their official website, and “Consume The Scroll” is precisely the first of the three tracks that will likely make up this debut release—which we hope will be released in physical format.
An interesting point is that both the name of the band/project (Scroll Eater) and the title of this first single (“Consume The Scroll”) are related to biblical themes—more specifically, to the Book of Revelation and the Book of Ezekiel, particularly the passages where God commands both John and Ezekiel to eat the scroll (book) He gave them, which is understood to mean internalizing God’s message.

It’s fair to say that at this point, Scroll Eater isn’t much of a mystery anymore, though several questions remain to be answered. First things first: at least we now know who two of the members are—if there’s anyone else behind the Scroll Eater concept. “Consume The Scroll” is their first public release of several that we’ll surely see in the future. Below, we’ve included the music video for that track and Scroll Eater’s social media links, so you can follow them and stay tuned for what’s coming next with this new project…
