Pandemia: Advenimiento | The Confirmation Of A Legend

As absolute pioneers of the doom death metal genre in Argentina, Pandemia is a well-known and legendary name among those who regularly explore the underground scene. With a history dating back to the early ’90s, the band managed to make a name for itself, but it is only in recent years that it has been able to maintain a consistent discography—something that was once very difficult for various reasons, including equipment, labels, recording venues, and so on. Following their excellent 2020 album simply titled “Pandemia” (a very fitting name given the situation that year), the band returns to the scene in 2025 with the release of “Advenimiento,” an album that delves even deeper into their unique take on Doom Death Metal, thereby not only reaffirming their status as a historic band but also showcasing their broad musical spectrum.
In this case, “Advenimiento” follows the style for which “Pandemia” is already known, with a particular focus on passages featuring dark and melancholic atmospheres, placing great emphasis on the background orchestration, which blends perfectly with the deep riffs and bursts typical of death metal, and with that distinctive influence that allows them to incorporate elements of rock and progressive metal into the band’s compositions—a hallmark that, in a way, showcases the ethereal musical side that makes them look and sound different from other similar acts.
We can sense this right from the start with the instrumental “Harpía Nocturna,” the album’s opening track, dominated by the somber sounds of the keyboard and a composition that feels almost like a horror movie score, serving as a sort of introduction that leads us into “Aversión,” the first actual song on the album that showcases Pandemia’s melodic and melancholic side, built on the typical chords and tempos of doom metal but with a style rooted in death metal, and featuring a truly inviting instrumental arrangement heavily influenced by progressive rock.
What follows is “Primigenia,” much closer to death metal and featuring an instrumental section that is interesting to say the least, much like the album’s title track; in that sense, “Advenimiento” lays bare Pandemia’s most visceral and virulent side, shifting between different tempos within the same song.
“Caos” features an interesting rhythm section, with a strong progressive rock influence in its compositional structure, logically adapted to extreme metal with gothic undertones and the typical blast beats thrown in; and to mix things up a bit, “Reservorios De Padecimiento” ventures more into Thrash/Death territory, but it’s with “Mors Gradum” that Pandemia’s creative and compositional side really comes to the fore—in a track that opens with a gloomy, dark atmosphere and, midway through, features clean vocals reciting a sort of prayer, which contrasts with the guttural vocals and those ecclesiastical tones on the keyboards. Possibly one of the album’s highlights, especially given Pandemia’s creative peak.
But that’s not all, because in the instrumental “Anhedonia” we can hear an excellent orchestral guitar melody with a musical foundation that is truly tasteful and in keeping with the album’s musical spirit. Yet another demonstration of the expressiveness Pandemia achieves through its music, and although it has no lyrics and features no vocals, the band has this to say about the track: “Where every note flows to channel chaos, connecting the spirit to the whole.”
As the album draws to a close, “El Manjar De Mi Enemigo” appears, starting off at a moderate pace, with heavy, pounding rhythms and a tempo that’s deliberately slow and precise, featuring various passages in between that take us on a sublime journey crowned by the fury and power of Extreme Metal, culminating in “Tríada (Cuerpo, Alma y Espíritu),” a truly climactic instrumental track, dedicated, as indicated, to Julieta, a friend along the way.
Across ten tracks, “Advenimiento” serves as the space where Pandemia has once again channeled its musical restlessness and transformed its feelings into song; in each track, there is an inevitable musical-spiritual connection, so to speak, though to be honest, the lyrics cover a wide range of issues and themes. However, it is musically that Pandemia takes on broader dimensions, refusing to be confined by a single label—though they do use extreme genres as a foundation, they don’t stop there. There’s a tendency to keep an open ear to anything progressive and sublime in music.
The sound production might not be all that great, but we have to keep in mind that Pandemia is an independent band that does everything on its own, and above all, doesn’t rely on AI, unlike many projects floating around on social media. No, everything they do is entirely self-driven in every way, and that’s why we appreciate it when they prioritize creativity and originality over trying to sound trendy. In that sense, we must learn to value and appreciate musical creation in all its forms.
Likewise, the visual design of “Advenimiento” deserves special mention. Featuring a classic cover for the genre, it retains the band’s original logo, and the inner sleeve is of exceptional quality, with illustrations that align with the album’s theme, several photographs of the band and its members, and the lyrics—which revolve around spiritual, personal, and social issues.
At this point, Pandemia is a legend of Argentine Extreme Metal, and as such, deserves our respect. Best of all, despite the passing years and the challenges involved, the band continues to release new material in physical format and remains active, but above all, “Advenimiento” has its merits—especially musical ones—and serves as the perfect excuse to listen to something different with a touch of originality within the realm of extreme metal.
