From Mexico, Roots Displays Its Entire Extreme Arsenal... | The Expansion of Death Metal and Its Variants…
Death metal as a genre has its different variants, and it is not my intention to lecture on the subject, but in any case, when different strands are added to the particular style that many of us already know, always within metal, things can become intriguing and fascinating. And from time to time, one comes across interesting projects, and Roots is one of them.

Founded in Mexico by Luis Angel Chavero, Roots is what is commonly referred to as a “one-man band,” meaning that Luis records, sings, and plays everything you hear on Roots. His first release was the EP “The Immortal Comes,” released in 2020, through which Roots made himself known to the world, and in which one can appreciate his approach, clearly based on Death Metal but with crossovers into other genres such as traditional Heavy Metal or even Doom or Thrash, all with an idea that starts from progressive foundations. These elements are not random but are designed to complement each other perfectly, even with the very idea of the project itself.
Luis tells us that Roots “…began as a project that God put in my heart when I was 15 years old. It was something that slowly came together until God provided the means to record in a studio, and that’s how the first EP, called ”The Immortal Comes,“ came out in 2020.” But that’s not all. Behind every project, there are always problems and difficulties, and Roots was no exception. “…it took years of trials and tribulations to get to that first material,” Luis told us. “Even the months leading up to the release of the material were the most difficult time of my life, emotionally and spiritually. emotionally, and spiritually. But in the midst of that storm, about to give up on the project, I cried out to God and told him that the dream of creating ROOTS was to bring light to those who were in darkness, and what better way to start than with myself. I asked him to help me in the midst of my desert so that I could then help others by spreading his word. And that’s how, against all odds, the first material came out.”

Although Roots is merely a one-man project by Luis Angel Chavero, it seems that “…the idea is to get permanent members not only to play live but also to be able to bring the gospel to people that the church would not normally be willing to preach to.” So we can look forward to a future as a band for Roots and be able to hear live everything it has to offer.
One of the things that stands out most about Roots is their unique approach to Death Metal alongside other genres. In particular, the aforementioned EP is a good example of this. Their journey through different corridors of extreme music makes “The Immortal” an album that is at least worth a listen. The guttural vocals and their dark, gloomy, and potentially exciting compositions, coupled with elements borrowed from other genres, make Roots something worth listening to.
In this regard, Luis Angel Chavero believes that “…I’ve never liked pigeonholing ROOTS into one or two genres of Metal,” and in relation to this, he states that “…Metal was something that hit me hard in my life from a very young age, and although it’s true that several subgenres are more present, such as death, groove, doom, and progressive, there are songs like “Constellations” or “Desert Chapter One” that are completely different, and that’s exactly what I like about ROOTS, that I can experiment with other musical genres and sound heavy but also introspective and melodic at the same time.”

I must confess. When I read the name Roots, my fanaticism led me to think that it was somehow related to the most famous Brazilians in the world of metal, but no. Even musically, Roots is something totally different from what I thought at first. Luis explains the real reason behind the project’s title. “The name ROOTS was chosen with the idea that the children of God have lost their identity and, therefore, their purpose. ROOTS is a call to return to our ‘roots,’ to return to God, and thus recover our identity and our purpose in God.”
The EP “The Immortal Comes” is not the only thing Roots has released to date. There is also the production “The Awakening Of The Call,” a work that deepens Roots’ proposal and raises the stakes much higher. Of course, there are also various singles available, released digitally like the rest of their material, among which “Priest Of Anubis” and “The Ten Plagues Of God” stand out.
Roots’ lyrics are entirely in English, although Luis does not rule out using his native language in the future. “For now, all the material is in English, but in the not too distant future, two albums will be released entirely in Spanish,” he said.

And since, ultimately, it’s the music that counts, we’ll leave you with the singles “Priest Of Anubis” and “The Ten Plagues Of God,” recently released by Roots in digital format, so you can discover for yourselves what Roots is all about, a risky venture in the world of extreme metal. Of course, we’ll also leave you with the links to find Roots on social media so you can follow this promising project closely…
