(2024 – 2M Producciones)

New work of this hardened and beloved band for these lands, which says present and scores in the year 2024 with this album, which is difficult to catalog with respect to its edition, mostly because of the way it is presented. Let’s try to be clear. “Inconsciencia” consists of two well differentiated parts, possibly thought as different EPs, but that added together result in a full-length album with 11 tracks, and that in the edition we have in our hands, two bonus tracks are added. So, as Jack the Ripper would say, let’s go by parts.

First of all we have to say that this album has a solid unity in production, sound and mastering. In that you can notice the great work done, even though the takes have been made in the personal studios of each of the members of the band between March and July 2024, and not as it is customary, in a traditional recording studio. To rescue that this is not a patchwork of two different productions, but that everything maintains a coherence from beginning to end, as much at sonorous level as of composition. That in itself is very remarkable.

Breaking down this work, in principle we have the first part that the band has called “Inconsciencia”, which coincides with the title of the album. It consists of 5 new songs, which turn out to be an evolution or continuity (depending on how you want to see it) with what meant the style or seal that Boanerges had been showing since their previous album, “Secreto Original”. The groove and the influence of the most modern Metal are noticeable in all its spectrum, making it clear that for some time now, the characteristic sound of the early days was giving way to this new reality in which Boanerges moves, with a lot of pounding, firm base and mid-tempo, interspersed with excellent guitar solos and chordal melodies. Gabriela Sepúlveda’s vocals (perhaps the biggest femme behind a microphone in our country) adapt perfectly and her powerful voice continues to be the engine and support of the band. Getting into what has to do with the songs, the first track “Contra Corriente”, appears as the most interesting with a catchy chorus. “Cambios de ADN” and ‘Escrito Está’ have that inevitable connection with the more classic side of the good old days. Boanerges gets more experimental in “Inconscientes Herederos” and “En La Copa Derramada”. Lyrically, without leaving their already known Christian message, the truth is that their lyrics are interesting and escape the classic cliché of any Christian band; besides sounding current with the themes in which they are involved, whose concept can already be noticed from the cover itself.

Now let’s go to the other part, or EP, titled “Influencias”. A sort of tribute to bands whose influence has made a dent in the members of Boanerges, or at least we think so. The version of the legendary Argentine band V8 (yes, like the motor), “El Vivo Sustento Del Inquisidor”, is executed under the same logic of the rest of the album and it doesn’t dissapear at all. It updates their sound and the validity of a timeless band like V8. Now, you have to be encouraged to try a version of Impelliteri, and on top of that with “Slay The Dragon”, one of their most intricate compositions!!!!. He deserves the best award for the best play of the game!!!

And there is more, much more. There is a good version of “Into A New Dimensions” by Divine Fire and the impeccable version of one of Stryper’s best songs “Rock The Hell Out Of You” plus “El Guardián De La Luz” by Argentinian band, Rata Blanca. Impressive cover of Iron Maiden’s classic, “Wasted Years” (Will the song be played by the Christian media? What a good question!!!).

This is where the inevitable connection with the classic Boanerges sound becomes more than evident, and whether we like it or not, where it is most exciting, at least for the old metalheads who have been following the band for a long time.

Finally, in this edition is added as a bonus track, the cover of other legendary Argentine band called Logos, “La Industria Del Poder”, a version that we had already heard on the networks in times of pandemic. The total surprise (and that if they told me I would not believe it) is the performance of the song “Storms Of Disillusions” (with the guest voice of Rubén Gauna) by the norway band Extol, a band that has little to do with the classic sound of Boanerges. The experiment is more than optimal. A Tourniquet cover is missing! For a next one!

The presentation of the physical format of “Inconsciencia” is excellent, considering that it is an independent production (we will always recommend the physical format…you know how we feel about it). The cover has an air of the concept of “Matrix”, making clear reference to the conceptual theme of this work, regarding the roll of artificial intelligence and all that entails. Strangely, the album has no pictures of the band, but contains the lyrics of the first five songs.

“Inconsciencia” leaves several conclusions. On the one hand we applaud that the band is encouraged to explore new grounds, without losing the essence of course, but the covers performed leave that taste of nostalgia in the old sound of the band. Technically the band sounds impeccable, in a great independent production, which says a lot in these times.

Whether this Boanerges is better or you miss their old days, is a question that remains in the taste of each listener. The important thing to note is that the sons of thunder are still in the fight, with new material stuff and at the same time, making a nod to the more traditional Metal, remembering that in essence, Boanerges is still a classic Heavy Metal band, and that is already important to note.
