The Swedish Band Returns To The Scene? | Anaemia Wants To Fly Again
(PH: Samuel Durling)
They released, back in 1999, a unique and excellent album (“The Second Incarnation”), and for those reasons of life, the band broke up, leaving as a memory that album plus some demo and split that is going around. With the passing of time, its leader and founder, Kim Stranne founded the band “Of Ash”, with which he currently moves, but Anaemia remained as a cult band, and those who could hear their only album (which is among our discography), can attest to the excellence of its mixture of Doom and Death Metal, with a polished and modern sound, leaving us wanting Anaemia to have the continuity that it did not have. Well, it seems that the band is back as announced by their recent Facebook page, so without wasting time, we were able to ask Kim Stranne some questions, who answered our concerns about this return of the swedish band Anaemia.

Kim told us that “In 2024 I was asked to put the band back together. Unfortunately it wasn’t possible. I was also too busy with my new band OF ASH. I don’t think the desire was really there either. During a gig in 2025 with my new band, the thought of Anaemia was brought up and in connection with that I found an old video cassette with our last gig. It took place in 1996. Then it hit me that in 2026 it will be 30 years since we last played together. Isn’t that worth celebrating was my first thought. On that path it is.”; on the possibility of Anaemia playing live again, and regarding Anaemia’s line-up, he also told us that “Not many people think about it, but Anaemia never had more than 3 permanent members. (4 members on our demo Spiritual Kaos). So, if and when we take the stage again, at least 77% will be the original. And 77 is a nice number…

A curious question about Anaemia is that, beyond the fact that in 1999 the album “The Second Incarnation” was released, the reality is that the band was never able to present that album live since, as Kim Stranne will clarify, Anaemia’s last live performance was in 1996. In view of that, and when asked if the band will have new material available soon, Kim said that “That new material thing is really a dream. Believe me, I’m working for it. But if we were to go on stage after 30 years, I guess people would want to hear the material from “The Second Incarnation”. After all, it’s an album that has never been performed live. Anaemia played their last gig in 1996 and the album came out in 1999. A bit unusual but we’re probably quite odd birds.”

On the possibility of hitting the road again and being able to concretely play live with Anaemia, Kim Stranne commented that “We have some contacts and are making some plans. Something will happen in 2026 and if it were a tour, no one would be happier than me. All nostalgic organizers who read this are warmly welcome to get in touch. We were called to stand on a stage together and it is perhaps now, many years later that the Phoenix bird will finally be allowed to fly again. We are armed with wings.”
Beyond Anaemia, Kim Stranne plans to continue with his current band “Of Ash”, in addition to the plan to return with Anaemia, “We’ll start somewhere. If it feels fun and is appreciated, I don’t see anything stopping a continuation and maybe even a new album. Of course it would have been nice to have a sequel to the debut after 27 years. Who does that anyway? haha. “Of Ash” will definitely be around. We’re in the studio right now with that band and it’s completely different members than Anaemia; continuing about “Of Ash’s” actuality, “We will at least release an EP. To start with. I don’t really like EPs and singles but it takes so much time with a whole album and I’m a very eager and restless person.”

It will definitely be a matter of waiting for the announcement of Anaemia’s official return to the stage, and why not, maybe a new album. It will be a matter of time. In the meantime, we can listen to what Kim Stranne has been doing with his band Of Ash, which is preparing new material, of which, according to his own words, we will soon have news.
